Time-out

Tesla has been taking it easy the last week, cause I came out and found her back leg was scraped and had white paint on it..

What have you been up to??
She had a tender spot on her sacrum and her muscle would spasm when I ran my hand over it (with mild pressure)

Googling was not helpful (i.e. injections, stall rest, no stall rest, MRI's (in which the horse could injury itself coming up from anesthesia) or just a bruise....

So we took it easy this week, hosed it, & watched for signs of improvement (or not) before full on panicking.

Yesterday, swelling is down, tenderness is gone, woohoo!

Filling out nicely!

Good, cause she needed some chubs!

Oh, those bottomless pits that thoroughbreds have for stomachs :D

True Black? Or very Dark Bay?

A gal at the barn asked me if Tesla was a "True Black" or just a very dark bay...

and to be honest, I hadn't actually thought about it.

Pshaw...A good horse is never a bad colour. Pink muzzles and crazy eyes included!

She doesn't have the tell-tale brown at the muzzle:

but she does fade out with sun/sweat/etc.

Also apparently she is purple on occasion...

According to a genetics calculator:

She has a pretty slim chance of being a "True Black"

$40 at UC Davis and a few tail hairs would give me a definitive answer...

and the more important reason:

how much more fun would picking out her perfect match be?

;)

Bath Time? Yes!

Finished up work early today, and it was very warm out, so I thought:

Someone needs a bath....and headed out to the barn.

I dropped by the local tack shop and picked up some Horse Sense Emerald Black Shampoo (it was between that and good ol' Vetrolin, what can I say, I'm a sucker for trying new things :)

Tesla hadn't had a proper bath since she started living at this barn, so she was definitely looong overdue!)

One of the lovely amenities at the facility is warm water (!!)  and it turns out that despite aversions to pink fluffy things, Tesla is a total Bath Princess. She would've stayed in the wash rack all. day. long.

More Bath Time, pretty pleeeeeeaaaase?

After just 1 use, I couldn't tell if Tesla was darker, but it foamed up great, rinsed out nicely and left Tesla feeling baby bottom soft. (WIN!)

The "After"

She cleans up well ;)

Nope.

Inspired by Megan's recent post involving plastic bags, fans and koosh balls,  and the well known fact that Bobby loves dressing up, I borrowed/stole an old feather boa that was my sisters, and hauled it out to the barn.

Cause who doesn't love three feet of dyed pink chicken/turkey fluff??

Apparently, not everyone.

It was incredibly windy, and Tesla really tried....as long as it was resting on a bush, I could get her to touch it with her nose, but in my hand...

Nope.

What is that monstrosity?!?

Which obviously means I need to bring it out MOAR to the barn :)

and it will be good practice for all the terrifying shiny satin we plan to win in the future, yes?

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Tesla is figuring out what it means to me!

Hay Girl

I've giving clearer signals, she's listening!

(PROOF: I tried all the techniques I'm learning at home with Porsche last weekend
and she was like "Sure, no prob, you're the Boss", but to be fair, she also is not an alpha - and we "clicked" from day 1)

Tesla is getting more and more relaxed
(no poker face on this one, when she is relaxed her lower lip is droopy)
and starting to see that maybe, just maybe I'm in charge.

A Huge step forward!

Conformation: Mid-May

I was finally able to get a decent conformation shot this weekend.

She was looking a bit shabby while my arm was healing, but she has just started gaining some weight with the warmer temps, a strong worming dose, and some rice bran. Her coat is coming in nice and shiny!

As soon as it warms up, a bath is in our future! as well as some much needed trims
(I'm looking at you fetlocks and mane!)

Looking forward to seeing her topline transform as she comes back into regular work (wheeee!)

All in a days work.

Went out to the barn this evening, to pull Tess out for some groundwork.

She waited very patiently and politely while I chatted with another boarder.

But when I went to put her in the barn aisle, she balked. We did circles until she was listening and tried again. Nope, still too scary. More circles, backing up (and all sorts of praise).

Shall we go in, now?

and she popped right under.

Silly girl!

Practiced our back & forth in the cross tie area, making her back-up until she felt some pressure, then lots of praise and scritches on her withers (hit a sweet spot there!)

Took her out to the dressage arena, worked through reactivity to "pings" on the mirror,  creaky wicker chairs, and I had her walking on tarps without a fuss by the end.  I can see the trust growing!

A free graze reward, and then we called it a day.

Keep 'em guessing

Had a good session with Tesla yesterday. Walked the entire property, and I got her to touch every scary thing with her nose (even the flapping yellow flag at the back of the property.)
There is a new mare in the pasture next door who thought Tesla was her only friend in the world. She raced along the fence next to us, crying and crying, but I managed to keep Tess focused on me.

Of course, apples never hurt, but I try to only bring treats sporadically, as I remember from the animal behaviour section in biology it is the best means of reinforcing (keep 'em guessing, will I get a treat this time??)

snacks???

Progress, one hoof print at a time.

I'll take it :)

Blog Hop: Redheadlins

"If your horse was your co-worker what kind of reports would you have to make to the HR department?"

#1: Located the box of donuts for the early AM meeting in Tessie's cubicle. It was empty, again.

#2: Requires structure and supervision to stay on task, needs verbal validation for every little effort.

#3: Her co-workers complain of "Resting Bitch Face". I don't see it.....
