Nails (and not the horseshoe kind....)

I'm waiting on video/photos to finish up my Schoolmaster posts...but things have been eventful in the meantime!

When I went to pick Tesla's feet on Monday I was horrified to find a nail head in her back hoof.

I know that depending on where the nail is - you can do more harm than good by removing it, and as I was walking up the hill to get better reception to call the vet, I saw Trainer J. and went over to ask for assistance. Even tho' I haven't ridden with her in some time, she was super sweet, and came down to check out what had happened. The nail head was HUGE - and I actually didn't know how deep it went!

It was placed in a safe position to remove, so Trainer J. pulled it out, and then I soaked the hoof and Betadined the area.

It was a good 3/4 of an inch long (!!!)

You can see the hole it left!

I let the BM know - and even took him the nail. He promised to have the barn guys do a sweep with the magnet roller around Tesla's paddock (where I think she picked it up)

Even tho' there was a CARPENTRY NAIL IN HER HOOF - it was in the best possible place - and thus far, she hasn't taken an off step. I'll continue soaking and cleaning, and fingers crossed it causes no further issues and grows out just fine :)

  1. Ugh that’s the scariest feeling in the world :( glad it wasn’t a bad spot tho (but is there really such a thing as a good spot for a nail outside of a shoe?!?) and hopefully she heals up no problem. My guy ended up abscessing after he stepped on a nail.... then took off his other hind shoe and abscessed that hoof too for good measure, but otherwise no lasting damage. Thank god.

    1. Oh, Charlie! Hoping we don't get an abscess - and did give a tetanus booster just in case, cause that nail was rusty...

  2. Yikes! That is scary. Sometimes these things work their way up through the ground (like rocks). It might have been there a long time.

    1. I know, right? Apparently the only time these nails have been seen is in horses feet! I know of at least one other at the facility that picked up this exact type of nail.
