Prepping stalls: A progression

The stalls were full of old straw and/or  4-6 inches of stratified horse droppings...

Trail Boss and I donned face-masks and got to work.

Pre-excavation:

The side barn door is shut in this pic

Mid-excavation: SO GROSS.

Post excavation (this had to be 4-5 wheelbarrow loads removed before we hit topsoil!)

Barn door open!

Layer of gravel - to help with drainage/stability

Stall Mats installed!

Such a smart design: side barn doors can open to maximize airflow, but little stall gates can keep critters in!

Trail Boss and I got two stalls done over a weekend.

Eventually I'd like to do it all in gravel and mats, but Baby Steps are good for sore muscles (and pocketbooks too ;)

There is still a TON of work to get everything ship shape, but things are looking better....
