With all the much needed downpour, and the lack of a covered arena at the new barn, things have been rather quiet on the riding side....
So what better time to thoroughly CLEAN ALL THE TACK THINGS!!

And as someone who owns a sidesaddle (loooong story ;), the SS experts have plenty of opinions on what products they slather on their 100+ year old beauties.
The #1 product that is sworn by in hushed and reverent tones is Skidmore's Leather Cream:

The leather cream is made by a small family owned and operated company in Washington.
I like supporting a Mom & Pop operation :)
A little goes a long way, and it can completely revive thirsty leather.
97 years young! She doesn't look a day over 30... |
It doesn't leave a build-up, and it gives a wonderful sheen and feel to the leather.
It can be a bit darkening - so heads up if you want your light oil to stay very light oil, or darken up your dressage saddle ;)
A wonderful product, and one I happily use on all my leathers, young and old!
Wowza, that saddle is older than anyone I currently know!
ReplyDeleteSide saddle is on my equine bucket list of things to do. That cream sounds fab - fancy a trip this way to keep me company as I clean my tack?
My memory is terrible anyway, but I honestly can't remember the last time I cleaned my leather goods 100% #shame
Although I did do my tall boots yesterday morning for the first time in yonks...baby steps and I'll build my way back to the strapped goods
I'm planning a 100th birthday party for her in 2019 ;)! You should definitely give SS a go - there are a lot of gals in Europe who do it (check out the Sidesaddle Riders page on FB) :)
DeleteLol @ the "dark aside"! Also great product for taking care of that lovely saddle!
ReplyDeleteThat is so impressive to have a saddle that old!! Its almost as old as my farmhouse! And now I want one as decor to match my 100+ year old farm house, seems necessary
